random cogitations
No matter what our achievements might be, we think well of ourselves only in rare moments. We need people to bear witness against our inner judge, who keeps book on our shortcomings and transgressions. We need people to convince us that we are not as bad as we think we are.

so you think you spend too much time here and not enough time studying?

in that case, i have a story about my week that will make you feel a whole lot more productive. :)

If I’m not much mistaken I’ve heard it already, but I’m not sure when you sent this message :P I’ve been avoiding Tumblr like the plague so I can get some study done, *loses followers* - 3 in fact!

The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.

I think one of the most universal human experiences is feeling alone. You’d never know it, but there’s most likely tons of people feeling the exact same way. Maybe because you’re feeling abandoned. Maybe because you realize that you aren’t as self-sufficient as you thought. Maybe because you know you should’ve handled something differently. Or maybe because you aren’t as good as you thought you were. Either way, when you hit that low point, you have a choice. You can either wallow in self-pity…Or you can suck it up. It’s your call.

Okay the anthropologist in me is made of piss right now:
The idea that more advanced technology means a culture is more sophisticated and above others is one of the most ethnocentric and harmful beliefs known to mankind. Because of this belief scores of unique peoples and cultures have been wiped out. In areas that have historically had food readily available through any number of combinations of flora and fauna technological development has been minimal because the people who live there just don’t need to develop certain technologies to thrive in their own environment. Not every people or culture is trying to be the best or the most advanced, they just want to live their lives to the best of their own standards, not ours. So believing that a people are “less developed” than us in the Western world is the biggest, thickest, stinkiest crock of horse, dog, cat, and bullshit a person can buy into. Before preaching love and acceptance of all peoples make sure you’re not trying to change them first.

My inner anthropologist is pleased with this post. Also I just like it because I’ve been learning about this stuff and it’s absolutely true. I italicized my favorite part.
Africa is not backwards. They are not culturally subpar. Each less technologically advanced culture within Africa has developed to its necessity, and to judge it from our perspective is entirely incorrect. They are not less civilized by any means.

About

diagonally parked in a parallel universe
My name is Rachel. I'm a Christian, a vegetarian, a Ravenclaw, a seventeen year old and in my final year of high school in Australia. I absolutely love Harry Potter. I enjoy thinking, discussing, reading, writing, and reblogging. Someday I want to get involved in law or politics and further the cause of conservationism. Travelling the world would be nice, too. Those I admire the most include Bono, Moby, Eckhart Tolle and JKR.

please be a little bit interesting
